Purposeful Picture

This is my most recent flyer and my favourite so far. I had a really tough time designing a flyer for this theme, this is my 5th attempt which turned out well. I am  not passionate about flyer designing, it seems to take a lot from me just to come up with one simple design. But when it comes out good like this I'm happy :)

I'm about to dive into another flyer design. I understand my client better now so I hope it is not going to be a complicated process. I am growing as a designer, so I am really thankful for the experience and great criticism that I have received over the months, years.

Design Drama

Had a designers block yesterday. Check out the transition in these flyers. The first one was immediately rejected by my boss, the second one received a "better", the third one received a phone call with the advice, "Take a break and get back to it tomorrow" and the last one... I'm still waiting.

What Is Beautiful

For my insides begin to despise it,

They revolt at anything plain,

The thing that does not challenge the chosen,

That agrees with the mind of the hopeless.

My insides have resolved to reject,

That thing they call beautiful,

The plastic of its texture, the

Shallow of its nature.

Beautiful is the rare stone,

The crooked tooth in the entire row,

Look closely, at its unique carving,

The artwork of the master artist.

Beautiful is the secluded home,

The dusty road that leads you there,

See the wild flowers that grow freely on its side,

See the many insects that choke on the dust,

It was all so well prepared, to give you pleasure

As you ride.

Beautiful is the thing of God,

You cannot deny it, cannot classify it,

Love it and its beauty will warm to your eyes,

Because in all things, there beauty lies.

Another One of my Designs

I designed this for some local artist. He sings traditional Zulu kind of songs. Intomb' Emnyama. Voicemail.

THE SATGE IS SET BEFORE ME

To either act out the reality,

Or something that is easier to see,

I enter,

I face the cheering crowd,

As they await to see me move,

Expecting an extravagant performance,

The works of a great magician,

They give a maddening applause,

I step forward and stand still,

I raise my hands slowly, for dramatic effect

And then the silence,

“Ladies and gentlemen,

I was meant to entertain you tonight,

But I just died,

So I will be late, by the time you gather here

To watch me.”

Then a roar of laughter accompanies the crackling claps,

More cheering, more anticipation.

“Ladies and gentlemen,

Go home, I am late, and if you detain me

Any longer, I’ll be late for my funeral,

You know how important punctuality is to me,

That is why I am here to announce myself,

When I should be resting peacefully in my final cave.”

They seem to be enjoying my announcement,

They are gulping down every word I say,

But I’m not here to entertain,

No, they must be insane.

I step back and walk away,

Then a message on my phone confirms a payment

Of many thousands of units,

But I am dead, why do they say,

“Lovely performance!”

CREATIVE BLOCK?

The best thing to do when you are running dry of ideas is to take a break. I almost thought I hated designing because I was doing too much of it and all my work just seemed the same, then I took a long break and when I was back, I had a great time doing my work! Also try different things, just for fun, design your 40th birthday invite, your dream house, whatever that may be different from your daily design tasks. Look at other designers' work and get inspired. I love Frank L Wright's work, the modern finesse does it for me. I also respect bright colourful artwork, abstract but not horrific.
